Principles of Insurance Regulation and Supervision

Certificate of Attendance Online Starting: 6th February 2024, 17.00 - 19.00

The programme covers the Insurance Distribution Act as transposed from the IDD and outlines the various relevant rules and regulations issued by the authority.

The intention of this programme is to provide the participant with an explanation of the prudential and conduct requirements expected of insurance market players in Malta.

 


The programme delivers knowledge on insurance laws, rules and regulations applicable to undertakings and intermediaries namely:

  • The Main Functions and organs of the MFSA
  • Overview of the Insurance Business Act 1998 and the Insurance
  • Distribution Act 2018
  • Insurance Distribution Rules
  • Conduct of Business Rulebook

 

The learner will be able to:

  • identify the various applicable legislation and regulations
  •  describe the various insurance rules, regulations, laws and codes
  • describe the applicability of such rules, regulations, laws and codes as applied to day-to-day business operations

Lectures will be held on the following dates, between 5.00 – 7.00 pm
Exam will be held on 21 May, between 09.00 – 11.00 am at MITC premises

There will be 1 examination session of 2 hours duration, during which candidates will be expected to answer 10 questions.

The pass mark is set at 55%.

 

Resit

The re-sit will take place on the same date of the corresponding awards of the subsequent intake.

Two consecutive failures will preclude the candidate from retaking the exam, however, candidate can re-apply for the full course and sit for the corresponding examination.

Re-sit exam fee is €60 inclusive of one (1) revision session.

Romina Bonnici, B.Com (Honours) Economics; MA Financial Services, ACII

Romina Bonnici is Senior Regulatory Advisor within the insurance and pensions team of Ganado Advocates, with focus on re/insurance and pensions regulation. Romina is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, UK. She previously worked as Senior Manager in the corporate and insurance law practice group of a local law firm. Romina started her career with the Malta Financial Services Authority in the insurance and pensions supervision unit for ten years and within the authorisation unit for a further period of eight years where she held the position of Deputy Director, leading an analytical and multidisciplinary team whose duties primarily involved the processing of application in the areas of insurance, pensions, trusts and corporate services providers.

Elaine Magri, LL.B, LL.D, LLM (Int) Cardiff

Elaine Magri is an Associate within Ganado Advocates’ insurance and pensions team with particular focus on insurance and re-insurance regulation and corporate matters. Elaine regularly advises the firm’s clients on regulatory and legal matters in relation to insurance and reinsurance companies, insurance intermediaries and captives and also assists clients in general corporate and company law. Elaine regularly assists in matters related to trusts and foundations.

Erika Bajada, B.Sc., MBA, FCII, FCCA, AIA

Erika embarked on her career in insurance in 2005 and has since occupied various roles within the insurance industry, primarily focused on regulation and compliance. Erika also worked at the Malta Financial Services Authority for a period of six years, in the insurance and pensions supervision unit and within the conduct supervisory unit where she held the position of Senior Analyst.

In 2019, Erika joined Elmo Insurance Ltd as Compliance Officer and DPO. Erika currently chairs the Regulatory Affairs Sector of the Malta Insurance Association.

Erika is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants respectively. She has also read for an Executive MBA and B.Sc. Business and Computing with the University of Malta.
